I think this lawsuit is utterly ridiculous. Would you sue the mall/street/gas station/whereever if you dropped your child off without the knowledge to protect themselves? It boils down to "don't get in cars with strangers"
When I was 12 my family got the internet. Of course I talked to strangers on it! It made the big world so much smaller and gave me information about the world I never would have had otherwise. However, before I could even get online my parents sat me down and said "No last name, no hometown, no phone number, no e-mail addresses." Being 12 and not thinking my parents knew everything (which I still don't believe 12 years later) I was smart enough to realize that they were mostly right (I didn't see the problem with giving a hotmail address out though :) ) And Look! I'm still in one piece and and thus far never been attacked by an internet predator. I never would have dreamed about meeting some stranger online- I still don't.

i don't think installing a sniff or parental control is the solution.
the solution in my opinion is not a technological one, but rather old fashioned real parenting.

i believe parents need to give their kids sufficent "tools" to get around safely in the real and virtual world. and of course there will be secrects, there should be. they just need to be the harmless type..

a parent that is neglecting the task of educating his kids about the real/virtual world dangers, and fails to have a relationship that includes some back and forth communications is likely to put his kid in risk in both worlds.

i thought you were opposed to monitoring childrens use (instead opting for a "circle of trust" kind of thing).

i agree with you on most, but i think raising a kid is more difficult than asking him/her to review his buddy lists. children are bound to have secrets, which they will never want the parent to know of. i know i have had them, i guess you had them as well, and in this day and age, trying to save your kid for himself/herself is bound to lead to an arms race (you install a sniff, he/she circumvents it using secure proxies, etc.).

i dont know what the solution is, and it scares me at times.
