gmail mobile

i downloaded the gmail mobile app to my blackberry 8700 yesterday. it is awesome! (does any one still use this word?) really. the best mobile app i played with to date.

it is fast. simple. and delivers the good.

it is just amazing that with all the companies playing with mobile email all these years it took google to come and show how to do it right.

now i have both gtalk and gmail on my blackberry. next should be google reader, so i can read all my RSS feeds easily.

I’ve never tried it out but Plusmo is a mobile RSS reader. It’s potentially awsome.

i installed the gmail j2me app as soon as it was frontpaged at gmail.com. its a bit slowish on my 6230, but it does have significant advantages over the wap edition:

1. the interface is more consistent with gmail.com
2. the number short cuts are excellent - really improves on the control (e.g. 7-7 vs actions > delete nav in wap).
3. the operation is much smoother going into mails vs the wap - shorter load times, again, just like gmail.com - i guess they do some bg caching, which is just not possible with wap.

and the number 1 feature:

4. it caches the user name/password. on my phone/provider at least, storing the cookie in wap just does not work. i had the whole thing somewhat improved by using nokia wallet for storing my credentials, but it still sucked. having this app storing the credentials and leading you directly into the mailbox is a great improvement.

my quarrel is with nokia on any of the shortcomings, namely:

1. no access to wallet from j2me app fields - so i did need to enter my credentials manually
2. while the wap version can be linked to the left nokia nav button menu as a bookmark, there is no such capability for j2me apps, which means i need to navigate through a couple of menus to actually reach the gmail app. this is annoying if you consider i used that shortcut several time a day.

Reader has a XHTML version at http://www.google.com/reader/m . It’s not as slick as the Gmail J2ME app, but it’s still pretty pretty zippy to use with the help of access keys.
